If you define your identity by your beliefs, you take idealogical opposition as a personal offence.

“I’m a socialist/capitalist/feminist/Gooner” = don’t you dare question my politics/economics/beliefs/football club.

“I’m Ryan. I believe in the merits of socialism, capitalism, feminism and the abilities of Arsenal FC.” = something closer to a reasonable human being (I hope).
