Dave,
It's not just a problem in advertising.
It's a problem in UK management.
A manager once played Devil's Advocate with me
tempting me to talk to the CEO.
6 months later,
the CEO sent me an all staff memo.
Cost-cutting ideas to increase frontline troops' salaries next year.
So I sent her my suggestions.
"Get rid of the office and save the rent where all the managers hide"
"Get smaller cars that do the same journey for a quarter of the fuel cost".
"Make the managers hungry and uncomfortable so they can be "bothered".
"Make them work every other weekend like the staff have to".
"Make them work usociable hours".

I got a very nice reply.
She wasn't too sure how to go about it,
so I sent her a suggestion.

A major ad agency suffered from over-self-important indulgent lazy managers a few years ago.
The top execs knew they had to do something as clients were complaining and they were losing business.
they took drastic action. They called all the top execs from different regions to a special meeting.
they put them all on a plane. All expenses paid, so they didnt have to bring any money or credit cards.
they then dumped them in the desert and told them to make their own way home.

Guess what. she liked the idea.
