A counterpoint: I have three friends who are in the process of divorce. Two with kids (messier), one without. In all three cases, one of the spouses has confided that they knew they were making a mistake on the day the got married. They felt it in their gut. But, they all say, they went ahead with the marriage because it made sense. He/she was a good person...their parents loved him/her...good provider...so many rational reasons.

They talked themselves into it.

I'm not saying we don't often make mistakes when acting solely on emotional impulses. I'm suggesting that we just as often make mistakes when over-relying on our rational selves.

We make our best decisions when we integrate our two minds. We don't have this big, symmetrical, bi-hemispheric brains for nothing. We're meant to use both together.
